NATIONAL SPORTS DAY

India celebrates National Sports Day on August 29, the birth anniversary of hockey hero Major Dhyan Chand. In 2012, the day was declared India’s National Sports Day. Major Dhyan Chand was a legend in Indian and international hockey. With victories at the Summer Olympics in 1928, 1932, and 1936, he was instrumental in helping India complete their first hat-trick of Olympic gold medals.Dhyan was so dedicated to his art that he used to practice hockey at night after his regular daytime tasks were over, earning him the nickname Dhyan ‘Chand.'

HISTORY OF NATIONAL SPORTS DAY

Major Dhyan Chand, a field hockey player, is recognized by many to be the greatest field hockey player ever. Dhyan Chand was born on August 29, 1905, in Allahabad, India, to a Kushwaha Rajput family. He was the son of Sharadha and Rameshwar Singh. Dhyan Chand had two brothers — Mool Singh and Roop Singh. The latter, also a hockey player, was a member of the Indian field hockey team, which won gold medals for India at the Olympic Games in 1932 and 1936.

Chand’s father served in the British Indian Army, where he was a member of the hockey team. Chand was well-known for his superb ball control and goal-scoring abilities. India won the field hockey event in seven of the eight Olympics from 1928 through 1964, demonstrating his influence beyond these successes.

According to his memoirs, Chand played internationally from 1926 until 1949, scoring 570 goals in 185 matches during his home and international career. In 1956 he retired from the army with the rank of major, and in the same year, the Indian government awarded him the Padma Bhushan, the country’s third-highest civilian honor.

To mark his birthday, India established National Sports Day in 2012. The purpose of the celebration is to honor the sporting legend and create awareness about the importance of sporting activities in everyday life, with a focus on fitness and health. The President of India bestows key honors on this day, including the Khel Ratna, Arjuna Awards, Dronacharya Awards, and Dhyan Chand Awards, to famous sports luminaries. Dhyan Chand passed away on December 3, 1979.

History and Significance of Yoga Day:

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5 each year, led by the United Nations Environment Programme, to raise awareness about the degrading environment and encourage people to take positive actions and help create a better future.

Mankind’s progress in the last century was accompanied by a massive increase in natural resource exploitation. Each decade has seen an incremental increase in environmental issues from marine pollution and climate change to the depletion of flora and fauna.

World Environment Day History

The United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (Stockholm Conference) in 1972 became the first global conference with the environment as its major agenda. At the conference, the right to live in a healthy environment was declared as a basic human right. The Stockholm Conference formalised the idea of World Environment Day. It also witnessed the creation of the United Nations Environment Programme.

Over the years, World Environment Day has become a global platform for people to participate in campaigns to spread awareness about environmental protection. The day is celebrated every year according to a specific theme and slogan that address the major environmental concern of the time. Each year, a different country hosts the event.

Importance of World Environment Day

This year presents a historic milestone, marking 50 years since the Stockholm Conference. Sweden is the host country of World Environment Day, 2022, with ‘Only One Earth’ — focussing on living sustainably in harmony with nature — as the theme.

World Environment Day is being observed at a time the planet is facing multiple crises — from climate change to biodiversity loss and an increase in carbon emissions.

World Environment Day 2022: Wishes
  • We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children. Happy World Environment Day
  • Let us all promise to plant one tree each year and we will have a much greener and happier planet to live. Greetings on World Environment Day
  • Your presence in this world makes it brighter. I hope you always remember that! Happy World Environment Day!
  • The environment doesn’t know borders made by man. What goes around, comes back around. We’re all in this together and we’ll all sail over it together. Wishing you a Happy World Environment Day, fellow earthing.

INTERNATIONAL NURSES DAY 2022

Nurses Day 2022: Here’s Why May 12 Is Celebrated As Nurses Day

The inspiration behind the day is the iconic Florence Nightingale, the British nurse and social reformer who dedicated her life to the improvement of the health sector.

Nurses Day is a special day to honour and celebrate the contributions of nurses all over the world. The day is celebrated on Florence Nightingale's birth anniversary on May 12 every year. The special day was chosen by the International Council of Nurses and has been observed officially since 1974. The inspiration behind the day is the iconic Florence Nightingale, the British nurse and social reformer who dedicated her life to the improvement of the health sector. This year, the theme for Nurses Day is “Nurses: A Voice to Lead – Invest in Nursing and respect rights to secure global health."

Why is May 12 celebrated as Nurses Day?

In 1953, Dorothy Sutherland of the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare proposed to the erstwhile president to proclaim Nurses Day in October. However, the proposal was not approved. Following this, Frances P. Bolton, the first woman elected to Congress from Ohio, also sponsored a bill for National Nurse Week. But it was only 20 years later, in February 1974, that President Nixon announced a National Nurse Week, from May 6 to May 12 every year. With this, May 12 also began to be recognised as Nurses Day.

How is Florence Nightingale related to this day?

Florence Nightingale, who is remembered around the world as the “Lady with the Lamp,” took care of wounded soldiers of the British army and their allied forces during the Crimean War. Not only did Florence Nightingale set standards of health care and nursing in the medical camps and hospitals during the war, but later also established Nightingale Training School at St Thomas' Hospital in 1860 to provide training to aspiring nurses and healthcare workers.

(International Year of Indigenous Languages)

(Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology)
(Protection and Preservation of Endangered Languages) योजना।

REPUBLIC DAY 2022

HAPPY REPUBLIC DAY

Introduction:

Republic Day is celebrated on January 26 every year to remember the day when the Constitution of India came into effect after India gained independence
after a very long freedom struggle. A salute of 21 guns and the unfurling of the Indian National Flag by Dr. Rajendra Prasad heralded the historic birth of
the Indian Republic on that day. Thereafter 26th of January was decreed a national holiday and was recognized as the Republic Day of India.
Ever since the historic day, January 26 is celebrated with festivities and patriotic fervor all around the country.

Shortly after Independence, a constituent assembly elected by provincial assemblies went about drafting a constitution that would govern the newly independent nation.

Dr. B.R Ambedkar was appointed as the chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Constitution. He later began to be known as the father of the Indian Constitution.

After more than two years, the constitution of India was completed and it was adopted by the Constituent Assembly of India on 26 November 1949 and became effective on 26 January 1950.

January 26 was chosen as the official enactment date as a nod to the Purna Swaraj (complete self-rule) declaration of independence by the Indian National Congress in 1930 — considered the first concrete step toward independence from Britain.

It is the longest written constitution of any country. With it, the country was officially known as the Republic of India — a “sovereign socialist secular democratic republic” that “secures all its citizens justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity,” according to its preamble.

Republic Day Significance: Why is January 26 celebrated as Republic Day?

The Indian Constitution is one of the longest and the world's second-largest active constitutions. It lays down the procedure, duties, powers, directive principles of the government and fundamental rights of Indian citizens. January 26 holds a significant value in Indian history because it gives Indian citizens the power to choose their own government in a democratic way. The nation celebrates this day as the national holiday for the establishment of the Indian Constitution. On this day, across all the states, various functions are organised by the state government and schools, colleges also conduct various events.

Celebration of republic day:

The main Republic Day celebration is held in the national capital, New Delhi, at the Rajpath before the President of India. On this day, ceremonious parades take place at the Rajpath, which are performed as a tribute to India; its unity in diversity and rich cultural heritage.

On the eve of Republic Day, the President of India distributes Padma Awards to the civilians of India every year. These are the second highest civilian awards in India after Bharat Ratna. These awards are given in three categories, viz. Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri, in decreasing order of importance.

Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav is an initiative of the Government of India to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of progressive India and the glorious history of
its people, culture and achievements. Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav is an embodiment of all that is progressive about India’s socio-cultural, political and
economic identity. The official journey of “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” commenced on 12th March, 2021 starting its 75-week countdown to
our 75th anniversary of Independence.
Various activities were initiated in run up to Republic Day Celebrations 2022 to commemorate Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. The essential component of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav is to connect the youth to our rich cultural heritage. The aim of these activities is to select the best talent across the country and provide
them an opportunity to be a part of Republic Day Celebrations 2022. MyGov is hosting various online activities to celebrate our 73rd Republic Day.
